Juneteenth

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers backed by Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas with news that all African Americans were free! Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement.

Each year, there is a Juneteenth celebration in Marion. It is an all-day Saturday event. There is lots of food, music, things for sale (I bought a t-shirt), and fun for the kids. People mostly just hang out.



We went in time to eat BBQ for dinner and to hear some gospel music. Charlie ate a corn dog and had lots of fun playing, as you can see below:
